Using Find my laptop

If your laptop is lost or stolen, you can use ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop to:

  • Get notified when your laptop comes online
  • Locate your laptop on a map
  • Take a webcam capture and a screen capture
  • Send a message to the finder
  • Get notified when the battery is about to die
  • Get notified in case of three failed login attempt
  • Remotely lockout strangers
  • Remotely recover important files

To use ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop, you must first activate it.

We also recommend to set the configuration protection password, to prevent unauthorized users from changing or disabling the ZoneAlarm 2018 software on your computer.

Note - Find My Laptop does not only work on laptops, but also on MS Windows tablets and desktop computers. Some features may be unavailable due to hardware or network limitations. For example, the webcam capture feature only works on computers with webcams, and the laptop location is only available for computers connected through WiFi and not through LAN.

Activating Find My Laptop

To activate Find My Laptop:

  1. Click in the MOBILITY & DATA panel of the ZoneAlarm 2018 software client.
  2. Click Activate in the Find My Laptop section.
    The product activation window opens.
  3. Enter a Device Name.
  4. Click Get Started.
  5. Login using one of these:
    • Login with ZoneAlarm account
    • Login through Facebook
    Note - If you do not have a ZoneAlarm account, and do not want to use Facebook credentials, you can create a ZoneAlarm account at this time.
  6. Run activation wizard.
    When you finish activating ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop, the ZoneAlarm 2018 software client shows Find My Laptop as Active and the email account with which it was activated.
  7. In the Emergency Backup Settings screen:
    • Make sure Allow emergency backup is selected
    • Make sure Require security question for retrieving backed up data is selected, if you want to add another level of authentication
    • Select a security question from the drop-down list
    • Enter an answer to your security question
    • Click Finish
  8. At the end of the activation procedure, you can click Locate My Laptop Now to immediately locate your computer.
    The ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop web page opens.
    Notes -
    • If you configure a security question authentication, then at the time when you download a backed up archive, a prompt will show and require you to answer the security question.
    • You can enable security question authentication from the Emergency Backup configuration ("Backing up Data From Your Lost Laptop" on page 61) section.
    • You can never view the answer that you configured for your security question. If you forget it, you can only change it.

Setting a Password to Protect ZoneAlarm Settings

We strongly recommend that you set a password to protect your ZoneAlarm 2018 settings. This way, if somebody tries to change the ZoneAlarm 2018 settings, or to uninstall the product, they will have to enter the password.

To set a password to protect ZoneAlarm settings:

  1. Click in the MOBILITY & DATA panel of the ZoneAlarm 2018 software client.
  2. Click Settings in the Find My Laptop section.
    The Find My Laptop Settings window opens.
  3. Click Set Password in the Password section.
  4. In the window that opens, enter and verify a new password.
  5. To enable users to use programs without entering the password, select Allow others to use programs without a password.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click OK.
Note - You can also open the password setup window through the Main Menu > Tools > Preferences. Set the password in the Password section.

Finding Your Lost or Stolen Laptop

Important - If you lose your laptop, open a web browser on any computer, navigate to the Find My Laptop web portal https://atf.zonealarm.com and login with your ZoneAlarm account credentials or your Facebook account credentials.

From the Find My Laptop web portal, you can see this information at the time of the latest Internet connection:

  • Location of your laptop on the map
  • Webcam capture through your laptop's webcam
  • Your laptop screen capture

You can also take these steps to find your laptop and to protect the data stored on it:

  • Send a message to the finder
  • Lock your laptop
  • Create an emergency data backup
  • Take a snapshot of the laptop's location on the map
  • Capture the view of the environment through your laptop's webcam
  • Capture the screenshot of your laptop's desktop view
  • Initiate notification for when the laptop comes online
  • Add other laptops that need to be located through Find My Laptop, or remove laptops that do not need to be located anymore

Sending a Message to Finder

You can send a message to the screen of your laptop - once, or periodically.

To send a message to finder:

  1. Log into your ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop web portal https://atf.zonealarm.com, and click the tab with the name of your laptop.
  2. Click Message to Finder.
  3. In the window that opens, type a message (or use the default one).
  4. To resend message periodically, click Send periodic reminder.
  5. Click Send.
    The message is sent and the notification window shows.
  6. Click Close.
    A pop-up window opens on your laptop if it is online, or when it comes online, and shows the message you sent to the finder.
    Note - You can activate Message to Finder even when your laptop is offline. The request for the action is stored on the server and executed as soon as the laptop comes online.

To cancel periodic reminders:

In the Message to Finder window, click Cancel Message.

Locking Your Laptop

To stop anyone from using your laptop, you can simply lock it.

To lock your laptop:

  1. Log into your ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop web portal https://atf.zonealarm.com, and click the tab with the name of your laptop.
  2. Click Lock your Laptop.
  3. Type your passcode, and confirm it.
  4. Enter a login message (optional).
    The message can inform the user that the computer is locked for security reasons, and that to unlock it, the user must enter the passcode.
  5. Click Lock.
    An email with a verification code is sent to you.
  6. Enter the verification code in the verification window.
  7. Click Verify and Lock.
    If your laptop is online, it immediately gets locked. To unlock it, the user must enter the passcode you configured. If a password was set for Windows login, the user will have to enter it as well.
    Note - You can activate Lock Your Laptop even when your laptop is offline. The request for the action is stored on the server and executed as soon as the laptop comes online.

To unlock your laptop remotely:

In the ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop web portal https://atf.zonealarm.com, click Unlock device.

Backing up Data From Your Lost Laptop

To prevent unauthorized access to the data stored on your lost laptop, you can back it up to the ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop web portal and delete the originals from your laptop remotely. To be able to do this, make sure Emergency Backup is enabled.

You can enable Emergency Backup during the Find My Laptop activation ("Activating Find My Laptop" on page 57) or at a later time.

To enable emergency backup:

  1. Click in the MOBILITY & DATA panel of the ZoneAlarm 2018 software client.
  2. Click Settings in the Find My Laptop section.
    The Find My Laptop Settings window opens.
  3. From the navigation tree, select the Emergency Backup tab.
  4. Select Backup your data.
  5. Select additional security options:
    • Allow deletion - to enable deletion of the original files remotely after you run a remote emergency backup
    • Require Security Question - to add security question authentication
    • Encrypt data on server - to encrypt your backed up in the cloud data for enhanced security
      In the window that opens, enter and verify encryption password and click OK.
  6. Click OK.

To start remote emergency data backup:

  1. Login to the ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop web portal https://atf.zonealarm.com.
  2. Click the tab with the name of your laptop.
  3. Click Emergency Backup.
  4. In the window that opens, select folders you want to back up.
    Note - you can back up maximum of 5 GB of data.
  5. If necessary, select Delete files from device after backup.
    Note - Allow Deletion option must be enabled.
  6. Click Back Up.
    A verification code is sent to you in an email message.
  7. In the window that opens enter the verification code that was sent to your email address.
  8. Click Verify and Backup.
    Emergency backup runs. When the backup finishes, in the Emergency Backup area this message shows: Back Up completed.
    Note - if the laptop is not online, this message shows: Backup will start when device is online.
  9. Click Close.

After you run a backup, it is archived and stored on the server. Only one backup archive can be stored at a time. To run another backup, you must first delete the previous backup archive.

Note - You can activate Emergency Backup even when your laptop is offline. The request for the action is stored on the server and executed as soon as the laptop comes online.

To delete a stored backup archive:

  1. Login to ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop web portal https://atf.zonealarm.com.
  2. Click the tab with the name of your laptop.
  3. Click Emergency Backup.
  4. In the window that opens, click Delete Archive.
  5. Close the window.

Retrieving Backed Up Data

To retrieve backed up data:

  1. Login to the ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop web portal https://atf.zonealarm.com.
  2. Click the tab with the name of your laptop.
  3. Click Emergency Backup.
  4. In the window that opens, click Download Archive.
    A browser dialog box shows and asks you if you want to open the archive or to save it.
  5. Click Open to open the archive, or click Save to save it.

Locating your Laptop and Taking Snapshots

If your lost or stolen laptop's Wi-Fi antenna is turned on, you can locate your laptop on the map with the precision of 100 feet (30 meters). If your laptop is online, you can also take a webcam capture and the current screenshot of the desktop.

Note - The location feature does not work if your laptop is not connected via Wi-Fi or if your laptop's wireless antenna cannot sense more than one wireless access points.

To take a snapshot while the laptop is online:

  1. Login to the ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop web portal https://atf.zonealarm.com.
  2. Click the tab with the name of your laptop.
  3. From the Locate drop-down menu, select the action:
    • Locate & Snap - show the location of the laptop on the map and take a snapshot with the laptop's webcam
    • Locate only - show the location of the laptop on the map

Every time you take a snapshot, the location on the map, the webcam capture, and the desktop snapshot is saved with the corresponding dot on the timeline on your ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop web portal page. You can select any dot on the timeline, to see the information at a particular point in time. You can also delete snapshots from the timeline.

To delete a snapshot from the timeline:

  1. Select the dot on the timeline.
  2. Click the trash bin icon in the PC Webcam pane.
  3. Click Yes to confirm.

Getting Notified When Laptop Comes Online

If you try to locate your laptop and it is offline, you can set up ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop to notify you, when it comes online.

To receive email notifications when your laptop comes online:

  1. Login to the ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop web portal https://atf.zonealarm.com.
  2. Click the tab with the name of your laptop.
  3. Click Notify.
  4. In the window that opens, click Start Notifications.
    Note - to stop notifications, click Stop Notify.

Adding and Removing Laptops

You can manage devices you track on your ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop web portal.

To add a laptop to track:

You must install ZoneAlarm 2018 on that laptop and activate Find My Laptop with the same Username. These instructions are available to you, when you click Device > Add in your Find My Laptop web portal page.

The name of the new laptop will show in a new tab on your ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop web portal page https://atf.zonealarm.com. A separate tab is created for every device that you add to Find My Laptop tracking. You can monitor several devices at the same time, and see their tracking information in the corresponding tabs on the Find My Laptop web portal.

To stop tracking a laptop with Find My Laptop:

  1. Login to your ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop web portal page https://atf.zonealarm.com.
  2. Click Device > Remove > [name of the device].
  3. In the window that opens, click Remove Device.

When a device is removed, the ZoneAlarm client shows that Find My Laptop is not activated.

Configuring General Settings

By default, all ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop features are enabled. You can disable features as necessary. Only features that are enabled can be used in the ZoneAlarm Find My Laptop web portal.

To select Find My Laptop features:

  1. Click in the MOBILITY & DATA panel of the ZoneAlarm 2018 software client.
  2. Click Settings in the Find My Laptop section.
    The Find My Laptop Settings window opens.
  3. From the navigation tree, select the General tab.
  4. Make sure these options are selected or cleared as necessary:
    • Locate your laptop - lets you locate your laptop on the map, using geo-location function (enabled by default)
    • Periodically track laptop location - lets you automatically track and save all the changes in the location of your laptop
    • Lock your laptop - lets you lock your laptop remotely with a given password (enabled by default)
    • Screen capture - lets you take the desktop screenshots of your laptop remotely (enabled by default)
    • Webcam capture - lets you take photos using your laptop's webcam, if the laptop has a webcam (enabled by default)
    • Send a message to the finder - lets you send a pop-up message to the finder on your laptop screen (enabled by default)
  5. From the navigation tree, select the Notifications tab.
  6. Make sure these notification options are selected or cleared as necessary:
    • Notify me after three failed login attempts - an email notification is sent to you after three failed attempts to log in to your device
    • Notify me of laptop location when battery is about to die - an email notification with the location of the computer is sent to you when the battery reserves of the lost device fall below 10%
  7. Click OK.
