Setting General Product Preferences

In the general Preferences section, you can customize general settings for your ZoneAlarm software:

  • Set the password
  • Backup or restore your security settings
  • Change how ZoneAlarm behaves at startup
  • Configure a proxy
  • Register your copy of ZoneAlarm software

To get to general preferences settings:

From the ZoneAlarm client main menu toolbar, select Tools > Preferences. The Preferences window opens.

Setting a Password

You can set a password to protect your ZoneAlarm product configuration.

To set a password:

  1. In the Preferences window, click Set Password.
    The Password settings window opens.
  2. Enter a password and verify it.
    If necessary, select Allow others to use program without a password (unless the program permission is set to "Block").
  3. Click OK.

Backing Up and Restoring Security Settings

To backup your ZoneAlarm security settings:

  1. In the Preferences window, click Backup in the Backup and Restore Security Settings section.
  2. Select a location and a name for a backup .xml file.
  3. Click Save.
    The Backup confirmation window opens.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click OK.

To restore previously saved security settings:

  1. In the Preferences window, click Restore.
  2. Select a backup file.
  3. Click Open.
    The Restore confirmation window opens.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click OK.

To restore the security settings to default configuration:

  1. In the Preferences window, click Reset to Default.
  2. In the Reset confirmation window that opens, Click OK.
    If required by the Check Point customer support, select I also want to revert my AV signatures back to their default at install time.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Click OK.
    Note - you must restart your computer for the reset to take effect.

Changing How ZoneAlarm Behaves at Startup

By default, ZoneAlarm software loads at startup. If you do not want it to load at startup, you can change the startup setting.

To change the startup setting:

  1. In the Preferences window, clear Load ZoneAlarm at startup in the Startup section.
  2. Click OK.

Configuring a Proxy

By default, ZoneAlarm software uses the default proxy you set up for your browser, or gets the proxy configuration through a PAC script. If for some reason ZoneAlarm fails to run antivirus updates, although the proxy is configured, you can manually configure the proxy settings in ZoneAlarm software client.

To configure a proxy server:

  1. In the Preferences window, select Enable Proxy Server in the Proxy Configuration section.
  2. Enter the Proxy Server name or IP address, and the Port number.
  3. Click OK.

Registering Your ZoneAlarm Product

To register your copy of ZoneAlarm software:

  1. In the Preferences window, click Register in the Registration section.
  2. In the window that opens, enter the required information:
    • Your name
    • The name of the company (optional)
    • Your email address
    • search
  3. Click OK.
  4. Click OK.
Note - adding email is not a requirement to get support or updates.
